Russian-Style Rug for a Restaurant in London
How We Created Palekh-Inspired Rugs for a Unique Interior
In the early 2010s, we were commissioned to produce custom-made rugs for a Russian-themed restaurant in London. The client’s main request: a group of non-standard, freeform rugs styled after traditional Palekh trays, rich with national character and decorative detail.
One key design challenge was that the rugs needed to appear as though they were “built into” the floor — perfectly integrated with the parquet borders. The rugs were to be laid without any parquet underneath, so absolute precision in contour and dimensions was essential.
Manufacture and Precision Fit: Rugs First, Parquet Second
With over six years of experience at that time in bespoke rug production, we proposed a precise and practical solution:
we would first manufacture the rugs, then ship them to London, where their outlines would be traced directly onto the floor. The client would then install the parquet to match those shapes exactly.
This sequence ensured perfect alignment and avoided problems associated with dimensional deviation in textile production.
When Humidity Entered the Scene
The rugs were successfully delivered and used as templates for the parquet. However, an unexpected issue arose during ongoing construction: the rugs were left unwrapped in a room undergoing painting work — where humidity levels were high.
Moisture seeped into the fibers, slightly enlarging the rugs. When it came time for gripper-fitted installation, they no longer fit their designated recesses.
The solution came quickly — even remotely:
— “Turn on the air conditioners at full power!”
— “But it’s late October, it’s not hot…”
— “It’s not about cooling. The AC will dry out the air, removing excess moisture from the rugs. They’ll shrink back to original size.”
And that’s exactly what happened. Within a short time, the rugs stabilized, and the client successfully completed the installation.
Result: Decorative Precision and Cultural Identity
The final rugs became artistic highlights of the space. Each piece reflects Palekh aesthetics, Russian ornamentation, and the craftsmanship of handwork. The geometry aligns flawlessly with the parquet, making the rugs feel like architectural elements of the floor itself.
Photos from the restaurant’s opening confirm: these rugs didn’t just decorate the interior — they became its visual foundation.
